The Science Museum of Minnesota is a great organization and even if you’re not in Saint Paul, in addition to exploring some supporting information about the current Titanic exhibit, it has some great online learning activities to explore. For the health or biology class, explore what makes you sick with “Disease Detectives,” “Habits of the Heart,” and “Tissues of Life” and history meets science in the “Maya Adventure.” There are also science experiments for children at home, interactive lessons on sound, animals, insects, and more.
Every age group could easily enjoy exploring these resources, I wish science could have been this fun when I was a student!
Enjoy the museum!

Two of my colleagues are going to a National Math conference in Washington DC this week, and Washington D.C. inspired me to visit the Smithsonian. Seeing as how the Smithsonian has about as many wonderful web-based materials as it does museums in Washington, we will visit one museum at a time on our Mondays. Today’s museum is the Museum of Air and Space. Not only does the Air and Space Museum have wonderful virtual exhibits of all of their past exhibits including but not limited to WWII aviation, milestones of flight, and Apollo to the Moon, some (like the Wright Brothers & the Invention of the Aerial Age) have interactive experiments and class activities ready to use.
No plane tickets necessary for this great virtual museum visit.
Happy Monday!

I enjoy the Museum Mondays, I had last week’s all ready to roll in my brain and then I got behind on another deadline and something had to give this time. Welcome back to Museum Monday.
Today’s museum was highlighted on March 27 by NPR it is the Museum of American Finance. Located in New York not far from the New York Stock Exchange (which also has some great educational materials), the Museum of American Finance is dedicated to the history of money and the role of finance in the US. Even with the focus on the US, the museum has been helping the public understand the current economic crisis. The website has a time line of the credit crisis that is able to be downloaded, topics of past exhibits which could be used by teachers for research or lesson topics, a PowerPoint lesson focusing on quotations of 12 finance “leaders,” and a great collection of finance-related links.
Happy Monday, here’s to a great week!

Van Gogh – amazing. Lose yourself and your students of art, history, possibly literature, in this wonderful online exhibit from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Learn about Van Gogh’s life, explore how Van Gogh used lines and light, learn about Van Gogh’s drawing history, or try your hand at a blank paper and see what magic you can work with a digital writing instrument. A neat site and easy to navigate. Enjoy!
